Sleeping giant Beiersdorf awakes to make its first major acquisition in years, buying US sun care brand Coppertone for $550m.

Coppertone significantly strengthens Beiersdorf's position in the US with the company intending to make further acquisitions in North America, following lagging sales in the region for Q1.

While Beiersdorf's existing sun protection offering under the Nivea brand is very successful in Europe, the acquisition of Coppertone will bolster Beiersdorf's presence in the category stateside, and adds a highly complementary brand to sit alongside Nivea in the portfolio.
